Les premiers immigrants juifs dans le sud de l\u2019Alberta s\u2019installent dans des colonies agricoles ou de petites villes, o\u00f9 ils exercent des activit\u00e9s dans le commerce du b\u00e9tail ou dans des magasins g\u00e9n\u00e9raux. D\u2019autres gravitent autour de Calgary, o\u00f9 ils travaillent comme colporteurs, petits commer\u00e7ants ou ouvriers.<\/p>\n

Le parcours d\u2019un immigrant juif l\u2019am\u00e8ne \u00e0 cr\u00e9er l\u2019embl\u00e9matique chapeau cow-boy blanc de Calgary. Originaire de Russie, Morris Shumiatcher acquiert l\u2019entreprise Calgary Hat Works en 1918. Apr\u00e8s avoir chang\u00e9 son nom pour celui de Smith et celui de son entreprise pour Smithbilt Hats, il encourage le port de v\u00eatements western aupr\u00e8s des visiteurs du Stampede de Calgary.<\/p>\n

En 1946, l\u2019entreprise cr\u00e9e un chapeau cow-boy feutre blanc pour le magnat du p\u00e9trole de Calgary, Bill Herron, qui le porte au d\u00e9fil\u00e9 du Stampede. Deux ans plus tard, des supporters des Stampeders se rendent \u00e0 Toronto pour encourager leur \u00e9quipe au match de la Coupe Grey \u2013 ils sont tous coiff\u00e9s d\u2019un chapeau de cow-boy de chez Smithbilt Hats.<\/p>\n

Le chapeau blanc de cow-boy est devenu un symbole de la ville et tous les hauts dignitaires de passage \u00e0 Calgary, y compris Sa Majest\u00e9 la Reine, re\u00e7oivent un chapeau de Smithbilt Hats.<\/p>\n

Early Jewish immigrants to Southern Alberta settled on farming colonies or small towns, where they were engaged in trading cattle, or as merchants of general stores. Others gravitated to Calgary where they worked as peddlers, small shopkeepers and tradesmen.<\/p>\n

The Canadian journey of one Jewish immigrant contributed to the creation of Calgary\u2019s iconic white cowboy hat. In 1918, Morris Shumiatcher, a Jewish immigrant from Russia, bought Calgary Hat Works. Changing his surname to Smith and the company\u2019s to Smithbilt Hats, by 1926, he began promoting western wear for visitors to the Calgary Stampede.<\/p>\n

In 1946, Smithbilt created the white felt hat for Calgary oilman Bill Herron, to wear in the Stampede. Two years later, Calgary Stampeders football fans headed to Toronto to cheer on their team in the Grey Cup \u2013 all wearing Smithbilt cowboy hats.<\/p>\n

Ever since, the white cowboy hat has become a symbol of Calgary and all important dignitaries who visit Calgary, including Her Majesty, the Queen, are lucky recipients of a Smithbilt hat.<\/p>\n
